Incredible animal facts: Discover extraordinary truths about the natural world

An elephant’s trunk is an incredible, multi-functional tool that acts like a nose, hand, and arm all in one. With over 40,000 muscles, it’s used for drinking, eating, smelling, and even communicating. Elephants can suck up water with their trunks and pour it into their mouths, pick up food, and detect scents from miles away. They also use their trunks to greet, comfort, and connect with each other, showing strong social bonds. Additionally, they spray themselves with water and dust to stay cool and keep bugs away. The trunk is truly essential to an elephant’s survival and daily life .

The title of the bird with the longest beak, relative to body size, goes to the very aptly named sword-billed hummingbird. This bird’s amazing beak, which can reach lengths of about 12cm, is longer than its body, allowing it to access nectar from the longest, thinnest blooms that other hummingbird beaks can’t reach.
